A New Quilt Beginning

I'm jazzed this morning as I start a log cabin quilt as a special thank you gift for someone who has given so much. Well, I can't say more about that or it won't be a surprise, so on to the quilt. I've been reading Log Cabins New Techniques for Traditional Quilts by Janet Kime. I don't know about you, but I love log cabin quilts and there are so many possible variations. On page 28 of her book she has directions for a log cabin star quilt called Don and Rachel's Quilt. I wanted to make my version of this design, but in a twin sized quilt, so I played with EQ7 until I had the block/border size that I wanted and then I printed out the rotary cutting instructions. I decided to go with eight inch blocks so that I could have six stars.

I'm using various tan and green batiks for this quilt

and I have the strips for the 24 light blocks cut out. I'm really hoping that our two cats don't notice these strips as then I'll have chaos. Miss Sweety loves to bat things around.

I'm listening to another episode of Syne Mitchell's podcast, WeaveCast, and this one has an interview of Laura Fry, which is quite interesting as Laura talks in detail about her thoughts on weaving.

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day and I hope that you have something special planned. My husband and I decided to forgo a dinner out and instead spend an afternoon skiing together. So tomorrow afternoon we'll be heading up the mountain to share the beauty of the Idaho outdoors. That's what I call a Valentine's Day present to remember!

Great design! If you notice any of those scrumptious fabrics missing, they will be at my house......we're going out to dinner tonight, but that's because it's my husband's birthday - not just because it's Valentine's Day.

Well, that is quite the flashy log cabin! Can't wait to see some of the blocks. Do you do your own quilting or send the top out with the larger sizes?
