Playing With Color-Placemats

Do you find yourself dreaming about projects?

Quite often when I’m outside walking or cycling,

I’m thinking about future projects.

 As I walk, I’m contemplating color/texture/pattern

and over the years I’ve found that allowing myself to creatively drift

while exercising leads to some fun projects.

This red placemat is the result of my last walk

when I was thinking about how to use my crumbs/scraps to play with color.

I started with one small piece of red cotton,

cut it free hand to have six uneven sides and then I started building from there.

I kept building until I reached the size that I wanted-

 16 x 22 inches (41 x 56 cm)

which was slightly oversized so that I could trim it.

I added a piece of flat cotton batting and then the red cotton backing fabric.
I decided to machine quilt it using many different threads
from deep red, browns, burgundy and black.

I found some strips in my scrap bin just the right size for the binding,
 sewed that on by machine
and tonight while relaxing I’ll sew the rest of the binding down by hand.

It turned out just how I thought/hoped that it would.
Creative dreaming while exercising really does work.

Happy sewing,
Judy
